New book coming soon

New book coming soon

Being a nanny for my grandchildren has produced many deja vu moments from my parenting days more than three decades ago. Particularly when my grandson does something – good or bad, precious or obnoxious – I see his dad all over again. I sometimes even go so far as to call him “Nate” instead of “Eli,” getting mixed up on who I’m actually dealing with. My granddaughter doesn’t look as much like her dad as her brother, but she still does things that remind me of when Nate was a toddler learning to express himself. The vast majority of the time...

A memorable day

A memorable day

Today, Sept. 11, 2017, was a memorable and an exciting day. First, it marked the 16th anniversary of when the terrorists attacked this country. I woke up remembering exactly how I found out about the attack. My sister called and we were on the phone watching our respective televisions 300 miles apart as the planes flew into the second tower and then the pentagon. We were in shock like the rest of the country. We didn’t want to break our phone connection that morning. Secondly, I spent most of today watching the wind whip through the trees outside my window in Athens, Georgia, listening to...

New Duane Allman book a refreshing perspective

New Duane Allman book a refreshing perspective

A while back, I set out on a weekend trip with a friend for an assignment by Lake Oconee Living Magazine. Our mission was to travel Georgia’s Antebellum Trail from Athens to Macon and find interesting things to do or see that were not included in the typical brochures. We chose to have our criteria be the degree of Southern hospitality we could find in these off-the-grid places. We divided up the towns we were to travel through – Athens, Watkinsville, Madison, Eatonton, Milledgeville, Gray, Macon – and each researched ahead of time to figure out what we could find. Since we only had a...

Response to Concern About Werner Erhard

Response to Concern About Werner Erhard

I recently received an e-mail from a guy in California who had just completed the Landmark Forum and Advanced Course. He had read a book published in 1992 lambasting Werner Erhard, the founder of the technology that is the basis of the current Forum and other work. However, Werner has been out of the country since 1991 and has no connection to the company formed after he left, Landmark Education Corp. The guy sending the e-mail was concerned about corruption at the head of the company that sponsored the programs that he participated in and by his own words had received great value from. He...

Discovering a Park Ranger’s Passion

Discovering a Park Ranger’s Passion

Hardly anything is more inspirational than coming across someone who is clearly passionate about something and excited about sharing that passion with others. This is what I found on the way to somewhere else a couple of weekends ago. I was on a road trip with a friend from Gordo and a friend of hers who had flown in from Buffalo, N.Y., with a specific mission. Our first item of business after we picked up the Buffalo visitor at the Birmingham airport was to go through Macon, GA. She wanted to spend some time with an ill brother-in-law who had just recently been hospitalized. From Macon, we...
